Everyday Use Alice Walkers Everyday Use tells the story of a southern drear family in a progressive American society. Ms. Johnson, the spawn, and her youngest daughter, Maggie, represent the tralatitious values held by Americans. Dee, the oldest daughter, symbolizes dumb patriotism and the progress made by African-Americans during the time of the story. The story begins with Maggie and her become waiting for Dee to come visit, and the narrator, Ms. Johnson, explains that Dee has always gotten everything she ever wanted. Maggie thinks that her sister has held life always in the palm of one hand, that no is a plant the world never learned to say to her (Walker 23). Walker demonstrates the bout between Americas social progress and handed-downism finished the bureau of each side within a southern threatening family. During this time in American history, African-Americans were being pulled in umteen different directions to either adopt African traditions or fail w ith their current American traditions.
