He was born as a break ones back but after the emancipation proclamation, he moved with his family to Malden, western hemisphere Virginia. His family was very poor and couldnt afford school so at the age of nine he began working, first in a salt furnace and later in a dimmeden mine. Determined to get an education, he enrolled at the Hampton Normal and plain Institute of Virginia in 1872, and working as a janitor to help pay expenses. He graduated in 1875 and returned to Malden, where for two long time he taught children in a day school and adults at night. He started working at Wayland Seminary, in 1878, and joined the lag of Hampton.
In 1881, Booker T. was selected to run a school for blacks at Tuskegee; called Tuskegee Normal. The school was extremely poor and had very little currency in the school fund to help the school. Tuskegee Normal and industrial Institute became a huge to his lifes work.

Washington believed that the best interests of black people after the Reconstruction era could be realize through education.
